Mountains of West Virginia

In the mountains of West Virginia, you can rock climb in various locations. One special one is called   Seneca Rocks located in Mononghehala National Forest in the northern section of West Virginia.

It's well known in the state as one of the most beautiful places to visit, especially for rock climbing.

The rocks are close to 900 feet above the North Fork River. They have been visited by many visitors starting with the Native American Indians who lived in the area before the European settlers arrived in the state around the year 1746. Actually, Seneca Rocks was originally located in western Virgina, not the state of West Virginia which was formed as a state in 1863. West Virginia became a state when it sided with the Union during the Civil War and broke away from the state of Virginia. At that time, West Virginia was still undeveloped and wild.

Seneca Rocks offers rock climbers many different degrees of difficulty through different routes. It's so beautiful and rugged that rock climbers from all around the country come to challenge their climbing skills on the 375 mapped routes. These routes vary in difficulty from very easy to very difficult. It's important to choose the routes you think best suits your climbing skills. If you're a beginner, make sure you take the easy route or you could find yourself in a sticky and troubling situation. For the most difficult routes, you better be prepared and well trained in climbing.

There is a Discovery Center at Seneca Rocks which tells rock climbing athletes about the hazards they might find there. Rock climbers should make sure they visit the center before climbing on Seneca Rocks. It's the smart thing to do!
