Sustainable
Tourism by GVC - 07
Light
house Tourists come just to walk our pier and
swim off our beach. We used to have the largest inland
fishing fleet in the world but, with fish stocks so low, most
of the fleet has left.
Callahan's
Beach House Our beach is second to none around.
People come from far and wide to play on it, enjoying the
sun and water of Lake Erie. Callahan's Restaurant with its terrace
is right on the beach. On a hot summer day thousands of
tourists enjoy our waters and cool breezes.
Bridge
Day Join millions of visitors
as you walk across the longest, single-span steel arch
bridge in the western hemisphere and take in the views from 876 feet up in the
air. West Virginia's largest one-day festival
happens in Fayetteville, the third weekend of October. It marks
the anniversary of the completion of the New River Gorge Bridge.
Scenic
Trails Bike or hike the New River Gorge trails.
Discover the riches of this beautiful area of the
Appalachians. The National Park Service keeps up 4 great
bike trails in the New River Gorge. West Virginia welcomes ATV's,
motorcycles, mountain bikes, horses, hikers and tour bikes.
Many of its trails have won National Awards for their
scenery and innovation. Some of the ancient travel routes
have spectacular outlook points. Every year thousands of rafters,
parachuters, bikers, rock climbers and sight seers come to
our area.
Glow
Worm Caves Entrance, Waitomo Caves, New Zealand The Glow Worm Caves of Waitomo have
attracted tourists for more than a hundred years. Millions
of people have been awed by their silent beauty. Take the guided boat ride through the
darkness of the caves where thousands of glow worms light
up the ceiling and reflect off the black water.
Ruakuri
Reserve entrance. The Ruakuri Reserve is an area of native
bush that leads to several caves. At night, glow worms can
clearly be seen and there is also a colony of bats living
there. Waitomo Caves School students assist the New
Zealand Department of Conservation by gathering data on the bat
monitoring project.
