and at the same time move more
toward Eco-tourism.
Tourism is a vital part of our
cultural, social and economical heritage. In our three areas (
southern Ontario, Canada - North Island, New Zealand - West Virginia,
USA ), we respect and celebrate our diverse natural environments, we
come together to create a sustainable eco-tourist outlook at our
towns. We believe that each one of us is balanced between a rich
natural environment and a vibrant, lucrative income producing
environment. Where we live is terms of our families and our
geographic area, is an important part of our
idenities
1. Students will identify the economic, environmental, social and cultural factors that support tourism-related businesses.
What supports our continuing businesses?
The clean fresh water, the nature trails, our town being pretty and well kept, our stores suit the environment and culture, many restaurant promote the businesses plus good small town service.
2. Children will understand the good and bad effects of tourism
activities.
Good things about tourism are...
Tourists bring in lots of money. They generate new jobs, and spread the word so others will come, they force improvement of the shore, force good water and good sewage and force positive treatment in our stores. They make us realize just how beautiful our area really is.
Bad things about tourist are...
They sometimes drive animals away, use up good land for buildings, pollute the land, sea and air, they use the water as a washroom, when they go boating they don't realize that they're dumping gas and oil into the water. Some of the tourist spread diseases like SCARS and they spread zebra muscles when they don't wash out their boat motors before transporting them home.
3. Children will be able to persuasively argue for one side or the other.
What would happen with more tourists?
Our small town would probably become a city and it would be more polluted with garbage.
What would happen with less tourists?
We would have what we have now and what we will have in the future.
4. Students will identify how and why tourism and development are jeopardizing the natural environment.
They jeopardize it by polluting the town, making the water dirty even though they don't mean too and with a lot of tourists, can't you imagine how much water, hydroelectricity (etc.) we are using, especially on July 1st or any Friday 13th.
5. Students will identify affirmative actions to promote and protect communities and environments.
Affirmative
action to protect and promote nature
We could stop littering and put up some signs that say "please use garbage cans!" We could also put some port a potties on the beach, we could get some high school kids to check boats for any kind of leak as a summer job and maybe get them to paint some garbage cans. The town should also get more tractors to clean up the beach and they could promote bio degradable boat wash they could also get some volunteer groups to paint and clean up.
6. The students will be able to describe how people create places that reflect cultural values and ideals as they build neighborhoods, parks, shopping centers, and the like.
Creating
places that are harmonious with our environment and aesthetic values of our
towns.
The new Tim Horton's reflects a water front on the town plus all of these places
- Callahan's, the Sandal maker, Willies and many of the stores all reflect a waterfront town. In Waitomo just look at their isite and museum.
7. Explain why individuals and groups respond differently to their physical and social environments and changes to them of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs.
It is important that all people respect and value these special places because they are of special, often spiritual, significance to the indigenous peoples of our areas. If you are fortunate enough to have one of these people guide you, you will learn so much about the flora and fauna as well as the history.
8. Describe and analyze the role of technology in communications, transportation, and infrastructure development.
More information can be gather faster and easier -faster spreading of the advertising of a place -safer feeling when they travel as travel more -get directions to otherwise unknown places - easier transportation to out of the way smaller places
9. We have learned some new words like;
bolctulism: a desease caused from decaying matter under the sand of lakes and other places theat effects maybe kills humans, birds and fish.
tourism: people that come from somewhere to a visit a place, do it's activities and see the sights.
*Die off* : massive dying of creatures in our lake caused by change in water temp and bacteria released into the water.
Sustainable: Something to keep on going (example: sustain mountain, forests, lakes and caves.
Eco-tourism: keeping our environment clean and safe and at the same time promoting tourism.
10. To promote our tourism
We should encourage businesses to cater to different tourist groups -spread news to tourist -local government makes restaurants nice and beautiful so that it matches the town. -the tourist tell other people to come to that town -some of the stores or shows hand out brochures, photos or letters about the town
